The Georgetown South Project will provide infrastructure improvements to meet existing GO Transit ridership demand and future growth. It will also accommodate existing and future VIA Rail and CN freight train service as well as the new Union Pearson Express (formerly known as the Air Rail Link) between Union Station and Pearson International Airport.
At the Weston Tunnel, the GO rail corridor will be lowered from Lawrence Avenue to Weston Road, with a covered portion between King Street and Church Street. The corridor will ascend north of Church Street, returning to ground level before the Weston Road Bridge.
H. C. Matcon Inc. worked on the Weston Tunnel project as a sub-contractor to K. O. Constructors. In this role, they were responsible for the installation of 2 shoring walls of approximately 2,000 lineal metres of shoring with a maximum depth of approximately 13 metres. One of these walls was designed to support railway loading, with the installation being done adjacent to live tracks.
The work of this contract was required to be done in a very tight timeframe, and H. C. Matcon mobilized the necessary resources, including equipment, to complete the work to meet the overall schedule.
In addition to regular work hours, they also worked evenings and week-ends to assist the project when acceleration was required.
Their overall performance on the project was extremely good. They were very helpful when we had site
conditions which required changes to the design, and were very approachable in terms of ways and means to improve the schedule.
